Sharing is caring

No matter what, product manager creates the work for project manager in turn program manager. Needless to say that all roles are equal. The designation is just a title/label however, role is the position which has a responsibility. It is difficult to answer a question that which part is important in the body? Similarly, each role has its responsibility to fulfill to achieve a common agenda. Fortunately, I worked in three roles, it has helped me in understanding everyone’s perspective to make any decision. It is difficult to manager the team and coordination without Knowing the problems in program and project management.

A software engineer doesn’t need to perform the responsibilities of Chief executive officer but a CEO should perform the responsibilities of a software engineer to manage the show. Eventually, anyone can sit on a chair but very few people can make the chair to sit, these people grow from scratch and understand the issues getting generated from all levels of the business cycle. So, my intention in this article is to explain how different the role is not how imperative the role is, because all roles are important in the business.

The Plan

Product Manager prepares product plan which helps to produce a product. Project Manager prepares a project plan which helps to deliver a project, it could be a small piece of a product or the whole product. Program manager prepares a program plan which contains the group of projects. The program could be a module or a domain or a line of business with one or multiple products.

Hands on

Product Manager develops business cases and functional flows to keep the functionality clear. Project manager develops the schedule and track it, guide the team on technical implementation. Program manager prepares high level integration plan and guide the team on technical implementation. A part from that he is responsible for seamless integration between domains, modules and different products.

Reviews & Approvals

Product manager review user stories, test plan and cases, architecture and individual project plans to approve. Project manager reviews development designs, build readiness, efforts and schedule to approve. Program manager reviews the module or a build or product integration to approve. Let me make it more clear. Project manager is responsible to deliver a module of code to the program manager. Program manager is responsible to deliver integrated product to the product manager. Finally, product manager is responsible to deliver the product to the customer.

Meetings

Product manager along with product owners organize the product grooming meetings and participate in scrum calls based on necessity, he organize the stakeholder and customer meetings. Project manager organizes scrum calls, project planning and project specific reviews. Program manager organizes the cross team meetings to have seamless integration.

The team

Product manager manages a team of product owners, project manager managers a team of development and testing. Program manager manages group of leads and project managers.

So, these are the primary differences.
