How to build good culture in your startup

Sharing is caring

I believe startup culture is not a process to build and request to follow. Startup culture is something that spread by people’s behavior, and process would spread by the system. I observed the majority of the citizens try to create startup culture with few methods and formulas. However, it can be created only with the organic/natural course. Consequently, to build a healthy culture in the organization, indeed, the boss and core team should have to adopt good culture and professionalism.

Never dominate with the designation:

I would say your knowledge is deserved for the designation not the experience. People respect knowledge with expertise, not just experience. If you are designated as a manager, CTO, CEO, AVP etc. in a startup and you are capable enough to play that role; the team would respect you eventually things will fall into place. Learn new things and upgrade yourself to keep the control otherwise, you will be forced to take other routes to control them. Share the knowledge with the team and train them, show a right direction to follow, build a good team and be always accessible to them.

Team Building- Startup culture:

The majority of the people know team building activity in corporate. Unfortunately, only a few people know why do we need team building activities. Team building is other than work; it could go out as a team, going out for lunch, etc. When you are not at workplace your behavior towards a colleague/peer would be good as your agenda is other than work. Team outing would create space to kill professional egos, ill feelings. Hence I would suggest having a good number of team building activities to build a professional environment; this is one of the great ways to build startup culture.

Be transparent enough with employees:

Be open to the employees about every step you make, so they will be confident about their future and organization’s future as well if you are not transparent enough to employees they won’t trust you, it reflects badly in various directions. Retain every good core member, admire, assign them into bigger roles, provide sound financial benefit.

Never take the promise back:

Being a leader don’t take the promise back. Let me ask you a quick question, how to create a brand? It can be done in numerous ways but ultimately creating the trust to customers is the only way to build a brand. Yes, building trust is the only way to build the brand for a product or a human being either, so be a leader and create a brand for yourself eventually, employees will get inspired and follow you.

Judge the people:

Judge the people, identify right people for core team as it is the first step for your success. I can firmly say that interview is not the benchmark to judge an employee; you have to do enough journey along with them to understand their skills and mindset. Never lose the right people, recognize them, prize them, promote them but keep them with you.

Enough freedom to make decisions:

How do you express your feeling and ideas when you don’t have enough freedom? Provide freedom to employees to make a decision. For instance, everyone has full freedom to express their feelings and make any decision at their home as it is their kingdom. Provide same freedom to feel the workplace as their home, we never know sometimes an employee can do wonders.

Key Take Away:

  1. If the king is good, apparently people would be good in the kingdom.
  2. Creating the culture is not an implementation of a process, it should start from your behavior so ultimately things fall in place.
  3. In the entire article, I haven’t provided the process or formula, I have attempted to guide the leader or soul of the company so eventually, the good culture will be in place.
